The Big 5 Near Johannesburg Are Closer Than You Think

Ask the average Joburger where to see a lion and they'll say Kruger. A Lowveld weekend burns a full day of driving in each direction. A Dinokeng weekend gives you two full mornings in the bush and still gets you home for Sunday-night admin. You're roughly 100km from Joburg, 40 minutes from Pretoria, and about an hour from OR Tambo — so if you're collecting overseas family from the airport, their first taste of Africa can be genuine bushveld.

How to see the most while you're there

The reserve rewards patience over racing around. Best viewing is at dawn and dusk, when the heat drops and animals move to feed and drink. Winter (May–August) is prime: the bush thins, waterholes shrink, and animals concentrate around the remaining water. If you want to actually find the Big 5 rather than hope, go out with a guide who knows the reserve.
